Really, I just intended to make three short bullet points, but then I couldn't stop myself rambling... Therefore, cut for length:
Story & Cast
- Rika had the best costumes.
- Rika had the best laughter.
- When Nicolai (Mami) and Pugachev (Rika) meet for the first time, Pugachev!Rika has this disheveled look and this cute... facial hair, a combination of tiny moustache/goatee, something looking very Russian (and a little bit Rumpelstiltskin-ish). After that, Pugachev is always combed, dressed properly (Rika looks AWESOME, and none of the /pictures/ you've ever seen does the /moving/ Pugachev justice) and "shaved". And damn, s/he's scratching the non-existent stubble on the chin quite often. XD XD <3
- Mami. Was there Mami? Yeah, I think there was Mami. She's was very pretty. :P And she owned the show, as usual. Although she had serious competition from Rika. XD Them both together were my favorite scenes. There was this one moment in BMB where they sing synchronously, and it's one of my favorite moment in the whole show (I love how their voices merge), and them singing together was one of my personal highlights in this show, too. Rika and Mami need to sing together (and synchronously) much more often.
- Speaking of singing, Mai and Mami duet-ting was also very enjoyable. I approve. Mai also dances very prettily. Which is also Rika's specialty and probably the reason why Rika gets the girl in these revues (BMB, too :P). One could get the impression girls like good dancers. I may have to take lessons.
- It was a good show. THERE WAS ANGST. I didn't really get the meaning of that snowstorm scene at the start, but Masha and Nicolai are a sight for sore eyes, the snowstorm is cleverly done, and there is ANGST. Yes. Very good start, indeed. :D
- I bought Mai's Masha right from the start. I wasn't too fond of the pink dress, but that's being nit picky and it's certainly not Mai's fault but the costume department's. (I couldn't think of a better color, though.)
- There was also the narrating trio, Tani, Eri and Kiriyan, who I assume filled us in on what happened between scenes and/or introduced the next scene. (Jen says they were Love, Courage, and Hope). I appreciate their efforts, but alas, they were wasted on illiterate me. They were fun to watch though. And at one point they even jumped in as horses for Pugachev's and Nicolai's carriage. (Pretty symbolic when I think about it.) I liked that moment. Not so much for the people present, but for the visual and sound effects.
- Visual and sound effects in this show were... special enough to get their own note. I can't quite put my finger on it, but I remember there were scenes and moments when the sound effects/music were intense, and important to create the scene ("Lol, silly, it's musical!" you'll say, but it was still... special), much like another actor... - Hey, I said I can't say what is . It was just noticeably different from mere background in some of the scenes. [Of course I don't exclude the possibility that I may have been particularly sensitive. Or drunk. Or both. Or suffering from some other kind of perception-shifting conditioning. The tambourines imitating sleigh bells are still ringing in my ears. (A not entirely unpleasant memory, mind you.)]
- There was Rika dancing - win. Rika dancing cossack-style - double win.
- I absolutely hated watching Pugachev bound and being dragged away and Nicolai unable to do anything.
For those who want to know what happened to the real Pugachev. Very, very sad.
Who did I forget?
- There was repeatedly cossack!Naruse (Kouki) appearing on stage. Much love.
- There was also Cossack!Yuuhi and Cossack!Juri to admire and swoon over. Very, very cute. Not nearly enough stage time for my personal taste. :P
- And ZOMG, how could I forget evil!Gaichi? Ho boy, what a smexy (I hate myself for using this unword, but unfortunately it's the only one that fits) villain! Pure delight. I was simply happy when evil!Gaichi was on stage.
- Ekaterina. *sparkly eyes* Wow. Just... wow. (A totally irrational, very subjective impression.)
- On a non-cast related note: Several scenes throughout the show had me thinking I should attempt a Pugachev/Nicolai photo love story. But I can't afford to risk getting on Jen's bad side just yet, so this plan will have to rot in the drawer for a while longer. :P
I will report about Le Bolero Rouge once I managed to watch its glory entirety in one sitting for full impact. And I will comment on Rika's Play Without Words once I straightened out the plotlines / timelines.
PS: Despite all the angst and drama there was still room for fun. Like some young inexperienced recruits using their commander for target practice and something very dead and feathered falling from the ceiling. XD
